Preventing Root Canal Infections
We would all like to keep our teeth as healthy as possible. Fortunately, there are many steps we can take to keep our oral health intact. One of the main goals of general dentistry is to help patients establish a routine of proper oral health maintenance so that tooth decay and, ultimately, infection can be prevented. At Dr. Wayne Myles’ Reston cosmetic dentistry practice, Smiles by Myles, we educate our patients on proper oral hygiene techniques and offer tips to help patients prevent decay and root canal infections. For Reston patients who come to us already suffering from infection, root canal therapy will be provided by Dr. Myles and the prevention of further infection will become our goal.
Preventing Root Canal Infection
Root canal infection occurs when bacteria enters the pulp that lies at the center of the tooth. The bacteria are able to reach the center of the tooth when decay compromises the protective structures of the tooth and leaves the tooth damaged and vulnerable to further infection. For this reason, the best way to prevent root canal infection is through the prevention of tooth decay. Our teeth are exposed to sugar and bacteria on a daily basis through the food and beverages we consume. That is why routine oral health care is vital to keeping the mouth clean and preventing tooth decay. Dr. Myles encourages all of his patients to adhere to the following routine:
- Brush as least twice daily, preferably after each meal
- When unable to brush, rinse the mouth with water after each meal (drink plenty of water throughout the day, as well)
- Floss at least once daily
- Schedule routine dental cleanings and exams at least once every six months (some patients may require appointments every three to four months)
By maintaining these oral health habits, most patients can prevent root canal infections and avoid the need for extensive dental treatment.
Treating Root Canal Infection
We understand that tooth decay is common and some patients will suffer from root canal infection. Dr. Myles is experienced in treating root canal infection with root canal therapy. During this treatment, Dr. Myles can clean out the center of the tooth to remove any signs of bacteria and infection. When the tooth has been thoroughly cleaned, the focus once again becomes protecting the tooth and preventing a recurrence of root canal infection. For our patients in Reston, dental crowns are typically placed over a tooth as part of the root canal therapy. The dental crown serves to strengthen the tooth by replacing material damaged by decay. This returns the tooth to its natural function and strength. After treatment, patients should care for the treated tooth as recommended in order to maintain oral health.
