What Is a Crown? Exploring This Dentistry Treatment

A dental crown, or dental cap, is a tooth-shaped shell that completely fits over a prepped tooth to restore its shape, size, and overall structure. Crowns are often used to repair teeth in emergency cases, but can also be used to repair worn teeth, balance your bite, conceal cosmetic flaws, and more.

Depending on where it’s located in your mouth, a defective tooth can cause problems with eating or speaking. Broken teeth often expose the sensitive nerves deeper inside your teeth, causing pain. Our dental crowns in Reston, VA, are made from durable materials like porcelain and help patients speak with clarity, chew with ease, and smile with confidence.

I’m extremely happy with the dedicated care I’ve received from Dr. Myles and his staff. They took care of my teeth for many years while I lived in Virginia and there was no one I trusted more when it came time to replace my veneers. I live overseas now, but I still come back every year for a cleaning and check-up!

Placing Your Dental Crown A Look at the Process

Anesthesia

Dr. Myles will administer a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout your procedure. You may experience some pressure and minor discomfort, but most patients tolerate it well. We also offer oral sedation for patients who have dental phobia, a sensitive gag reflex, or discomfort in the dental chair.

Prepare the Tooth

If you're receiving treatment for a concern like a root canal infection, that procedure will be performed first. Damaged or decayed tissue will be removed from the tooth and it will be reshaped to accommodate your crown.

Impressions

Your dentist will take impressions of your treated tooth and dental arch to aid in the fabrication of your custom crown. These impressions will help technicians create a crown that looks natural and blends in with your smile.

Temporary Crown

Your dentist will place a temporary crown so you don't have to go another day without restored function.

Dental Lab

Your impressions will be sent to a dental lab where technicians will create your custom crown to our exact specifications.

Placement

Once your permanent crown is created, typically in a few days, you can come back to our Reston, VA, dental office where your dentist will remove your temporary crown and bond your permanent restoration in place.

Implant-Supported Crowns Replace Missing Teeth

If you're receiving an implant-supported crown, our dentist will refer you to a trusted oral surgeon for implant placement. Dental implants require at least two appointments, a lengthy healing period for the implant to integrate with the jawbone, and another healing period for the gums to heal around the abutment.

Once the implant process is complete, you can return to our Reston office where our dentist will take impressions and create your custom crown.

Caring for Your Dental Crown

Dental crowns typically last about 15 years, but can last up to 30 years with proper care. To help your crown last as long as possible, you should:

Follow an Oral Hygiene Routine

Brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss once a day, and use mouthwash to keep plaque to a minimum. If you have a dental implant, be sure to floss around it.

Attend Regular Dental Checkups

Visit our Reston, VA, office for dentistry checkups every six months so our hygienists can give you a thorough cleaning and our dentist can catch minor concerns before they become serious problems. Dr. Myles will also let you know when it's time to replace your crown.

Minimize Staining Foods and Drinks

Hard foods can damage your crown and sticky foods can pull it out of place altogether. We recommend biting into and chewing these foods with teeth that haven't received restorations. Additionally, while porcelain is stain-resistant, certain foods and drinks can stain your natural teeth over time and create an uneven smile. Try to minimize your intake of these foods and beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine, and drink them through a straw if possible.
