At Smiles by Myles, we understand that situations can occur that can make it difficult to brush, floss, or feel your best. This includes problems such as canker sores, which are mouth lesions and sores that can be extremely uncomfortable.
WHAT IS A CANKER SORE?
A canker sore is one of many mouth sores or oral lesions that can develop. Canker sores are commonly noticed as small lesions or areas of swelling that have a yellow center and red border. These oral sores are not contagious, but often develop anywhere in the mouth, including the cheeks, tongue, gum line, lips, and throat. They can vary in size and may include one or more within a cluster. They are sometimes confused with cold sores, which are caused by the herpes virus and only causes sores to develop on the outside of the mouth, not on the inside.
WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT A CANKER SORE?
Canker sores are incredibly painful for most patients. Without treatment, they will typically heal and go away on their own after about a week or two. Patients can reduce discomfort caused by these lesions with the use of over-the-counter pain relievers and non-prescription topical ointments that can make it easier for patients to eat and feel more comfortable as the sore heals. The team at Smiles by Myles may also provide a special mouth rinse that can reduce irritation or prescribe antibiotics if there is a secondary infection present that is contributing to pain or development of canker sores. If you are having difficulty in managing one or more canker sores in the mouth that are causing severe pain, it may be a good time to contact a professional for further evaluation.
