Of course, before we get to any of these specific treatments, we begin with a thorough dental cleaning and exam. At these twice yearly appointments, we clean your teeth, perform an oral cancer screening and look for any signs that would indicate any of the above listed treatments are required. For example, if we a decayed tooth, a porcelain crown or an inlay or onlay can restore the form and function of that tooth.
Another common problem we find is evidence of gum disease. In its early stage called gingivitis, gum disease is marked by red, swollen and bleeding gums. As this disease progresses to become periodontitis, the symptoms include bad breath and a bad taste in your mouth; enlarged gum pockets; loose teeth; and ultimately tooth loss. Depending on the severity of your gum disease, Dr. Myles will recommend the appropriate treatment.
With scaling and root planing, a hygienist removes tartar buildup from above and below the gum line and then smooths rough root surfaces. The topical antibiotic Arestin may then be applied to kill the bacteria that causes gum disease. For more severe cases, there is minimally invasive soft tissue laser therapy.
