Knocked-Out Tooth? Find Out How It Can Be Saved if Treated in a Timely Manner

YOU’RE PLAYING A FRIENDLY GAME OF FOOTBALL WITH YOUR

Friends when you’re suddenly tackled from behind. You hit the ground hard but when you start to stand up, you notice a tooth. Feeling around in your mouth, you realize it’s yours and scramble to pick it up. What do you do? If this scenario sounds like it’s something that could happen to you, learn how immediate action can lead to your emergency dentist saving your tooth.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOUR TOOTH IS KNOCKED OUT?

The moment your tooth gets knocked out, make sure you retrieve it by its crown and not the root, as it can damage the lower portion of your tooth if you’re not careful. Rinse it off with water and if possible, try to reinsert the tooth into the socket. If unsuccessful, place your tooth in a container of milk or in your mouth next to your cheek to keep it moist.

Make sure you call your dentist’s office as soon as possible to alert them to the situation. It’s imperative that you see your dentist within 30 minutes or an hour after the incident if you want to try and save your tooth.

HOW CAN IT BE REPLACED IF THE TOOTH CAN’T BE SAVED?

If you are unable to get to your dentist’s office within an hour and the tooth is no longer viable, there are solutions for replacing the tooth. After examining your bone and oral health, your dentist might suggest one of the following methods:

Dental Implant: Using a titanium post (implant), your dentist will surgically place it into your jawbone and allow it to heal for 3-6 months. After you’ve fully recovered and the implant has fused to the bone and surrounding tissue, a custom-made dental crown will be placed on top.

Dental Bridge: Your dentist will use your natural teeth on either side of the gap as anchors for your custom prosthetic. Fusing three dental crowns together to create a bridge, your dentist will file down your natural teeth so that the crowns will fit comfortably over the regular teeth. Once in place, the middle crown will sit on top of the gums to recreate the look of a complete smile.

Time is of the essence when your tooth is knocked out, so make sure you take the right precautions and are prepared should this happen to you. If you’re seen quickly enough, it might be possible for your dentist to save your tooth; however, don’t be dismayed if it’s discovered you need a replacement solution instead.
